Palmerton, PA - January 18, 2024: The top two teams in the Colonial League met at a packed Palmerton High School gym on Thursday night. Notre Dame Green Pond High School, East Division, and Palmerton High School, West Division, came into the game atop their respective division. Notre Dame Green Pond was looking to preserve their undefeated record (6-0, 10-0), while Palmerton (5-0, 8-1) was looking to avenge their only loss of the season, which came six days earlier at the hands of Saucon Valley High School. The contest would need two extra periods for it to be decided with Notre Dame Green Pond escaping with the victory in double overtime 85-79. Notre Dame Green Pond led by slim margins most of the way through regulation, with Palmerton staying within striking distance. Then, with under a minute to play in regulation and being down by four, Palmerton got a rebound and took it the length of the floor where Matt Machalik drove to the basket only to be fouled. Machalik went to the line and made the first free throw. His second attempt missed but was rebounded by Palmerton. The ball was kicked out to Palmerton's Trace Stahler who was waiting at the 3-point line. Stahler made the 3-point shot for his first points of the game and all of a sudden with seconds left in regulation, the game was tied. In the first overtime period, Palmerton seemed to have the momentum but Notre Dame Green Pond fought back to tie the score up once again, sending it into the second overtime. Then, Notre Dame Green Pond took control, making their shots while Palmerton missed. Notre Dame Green Pond was led by Cameron Bohn (10) who had 24 points, including 18 points from 3-point territory, and Dainn Vassallo (11) who contributed 23 points. Palmerton was led by Brayden Hosier (23) who had 30 points and Matt Machalik (2) who had 27 points. Notre Dame Green Pond improved to 11-0 overall while Palmerton fell to 8-2 overall.
