Moravian Defeats DeSales

Bethlehem, PA - April 22, 2025: The Moravian University baseball team defeated visiting DeSales University 14-7 Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference rivalry game at Gillespie Field.


Moravian sophomore Nick Leonard (17) recorded the win. He pitched two innings, gave up two hits and no runs. DeSales’ Zach Rothermel (39) was credited with the loss. He pitched two innings as well, gave up seven runs on three hits and walked three. Moravian had twelve hits to DeSales' seven.


After a scoreless first inning, Moravian scored seven runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Matt Westcott (27) walked to get on base. He then then stole 2nd base and advanced to third base on a ground out by Sean Superka (24), a Parkland High School graduate. Nathan Jones (29), a Notre Dame Green Pond High School graduate, singled through the left side to score Westocott and put Moravian on the scoreboard. Troy Rabosky (44) and Wyatt Harrar (10), a Palisades High School graduate, also recorded hits in the inning while DeSales recorded two errors, a hit by pitch, and a wild pitch.


DeSales threatened a comeback when in the top of the third inning they scored three runs followed by two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Moravian thwarted the comeback however when they scored five runs in the bottom half of the fourth.


DeSales added runs in the top of the fifth and ninth innings while Moravian added runs in the bottom of the sixth and eighth innings.


In the game, Moravian utilized eight different pitchers while DeSales utilized five.


Seven Moravian players recorded hits. David Olsakowski (6) led the Greyhounds with three hits while scoring two runs. Rabosky, Harrar, and Jones each had two hits. Harrar had four RBI’s while Jones had three RBI’s.


DeSales’ Gavin Zavorski (11) and John Rorick (7) each had two hits for the Bulldogs.


The teams combined for seven errors in the game. There were a combined sixteen walks, seven hit by pitches, and five wild pitches.


Several other District XI graduates saw action or recorded hits for either team. They included Tyler Bonelli (Palisades High School), Luke Piripavel (Liberty High School), Luke Keitsock (Pottsville High School), Eric Wert (Bethlehem Catholic High School), Jacob Rivera (Liberty High School), Colin Houck (Southern Lehigh High School), Aaron Schneider (William Allen High School), and Owen Fischl (Whitehall High School).


Moravian improved to 11-21 overall with the win while DeSales fell to 17-18 overall.


Moravian is a member of the Landmark Conference while DeSales is a member of the Middle Atlantic (Freedom) Conference.
