Bethlehem, PA - September 16, 2023: Lehigh University (1-1) hosted Cornell University (0-0) of the Ivy League at Goodman Stadium on a beautiful fall Saturday. Cornell started quick, scoring two touchdowns in the 1st quarter on a 37-yard pass play and a 20-yard pass play. They then added a 32-yard field goal with 1:25 left in the half as the game looked like it may get out of hand for Lehigh. The Mountain Hawk's offense responded and got it going, putting together an impressive drive with under two minutes to go before the half, 17-7. The story of the game however was Lehigh's tough defense which made adjustments and buckled down after Cornell's early scores. The Lehigh defense stopped Cornell numerous times during the afternoon, several of which Cornell was in the red-zone, on big third and fourth downs. Cornell had to settle for a couple field goals but also missed a couple as well. Lehigh had another impressive drive in the 4th quarter, finished off by a 4-yard run around the right side by QB Brayten Silbor. The score put Lehigh within a touchdown of taking the lead, 20-14. Cornell added a 29-yard field goal minutes later, 23-14. Lehigh's offense capped the day with a ten play, 63-yard drive, which resulted in a 8-yard pass play for a touchdown with under two minutes to go in the game. The final score would be 23-20 Cornell. Cornell managed to only convert 7 of 19 on third or fourth down conversion attempts against a stubborn Lehigh defense. Cornell's defense did manage two interceptions which thwarted Lehigh drives.
