#17 Lehigh v #18 Navy

Bethlehem, PA - January 20, 2024: The 17th ranked Lehigh University wrestling team defeated #18 Navy 23-15 at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall Saturday afternoon, on Salute to Service Day, to stretch their win streak to four. Lehigh and Navy would split the bouts 5-5 but Lehigh's bonus points would prove to be the big difference. The match started at 184 pounds with Navy's David Key winning a close battle 4-3 over Lehigh's Jack Wilt. Afterward, Lehigh's Michael Beard got things rolling for Lehigh, winning the 197 pound bout with a tech fall 21-5. Lehigh won the next three bouts, including a big fall at 125 pounds by Sheldon Seymour. Navy won at 141 and 149 pounds and it seemed as the momentum was shifting in the favor of a Navy comeback. Then, Lehigh's Max Brignola pinned Navy's Jonathan Ley at 157 to pretty much take the wind out of Navy's sail and cement the victory for Lehigh. Senior Andrew Cerniglia of Navy, a local Notre Dame Green Pond High School graduate, notched the victory at 165 pounds 6-4 in front of the hometown crowd. Navy also won at 174 pounds but it wasn't enough. Coach Pat Santoro said after the match: "Bonus points are always big, that's our team. We left some matches out there that we could have won. We need to change that and get better in some positions." As part of Salute to Service Day, U.S. Navy Retired Vice Admiral, Colin Kilrain, a 1982 Lehigh University graduate, four-time EIWA champion, and 3-time All-American, served as Lehigh's honorary captain. The below photo shows Lehigh's Jake Logan and Navy's Andrew Cerniglia squaring off during the 165 pound bout.
